A History

Established as the first festival of its kind in Europe, in 2017

The Lit Young Writers' Festival started with a vision to bring young people together through literature, no matter where they were at.

A brainchild of Waterford Youth Arts Creative Writing teacher Eimear Cheasty and a rambunctious bunch of young adults in her class, The Lit has been internationally lauded for its innovative structure as a youth-led celebration of literature.

With a mission to train the next generation of artistic curators, The Lit has brought award-winning and internationally known writers and creatives to Ireland's South East.

The festival has also acted as a launch pad for young creatives looking to get a foothold in their artistic careers.

Neeva Coughlan

Production Coordinator

Hi, I'm Neeva. I'm 17, and I love music and the arts. I'm currently interested in roller skating and would love to join a roller Derby team. Additionally, I enjoy playing the bass and learning new songs. My hope for the future is to pursue a career in event management or work on the production side of music events. I'm primarily an actor, having performed around the country, Waterford, Cork, Belfast, and I am also familiar with film. I have directed a multi-award winning film, receiving laurels for best youth film and best group with the Fresh Film Festival among others.

Evan Wemyss

Technical Assistant / Event Coordinator / Merchandising

I am a filmmaker and creative from Co. Waterford. I chose to specialise in audio and editing, so that I can use my attention to detail to ensure that the films I work on can reach their full artistic potential. As Vice-Chair of Waterford Comhairle na nÓg, I am inspired by the issues affecting young people, and how he can help solve them. I hope my work in the local community encourages me to be unique and spread creativity.

& Artist Liasion

My name is Clara and I am a sixteen-year-old aspiring writer and film-maker. I am an imaginative and creative individual with many hobbies in the arts. I am a member of Waterford Youth Arts, Faronshoneen Youth Centre and Waterford Comhairle na nÓg. Reading and writing stories are some of my main interests. I primarily write film scripts, but I also hope to work on short stories and books. I've written multiple short film scripts and directed two short films. I am also an amateur crocheter, and I enjoy embroidery and sewing on occasion. Art and drawing are also fun, but I'm very out of practice. I enjoy reading books in my free time, particularly fantasy and fiction. Anything with cats or dragons is also a shoo-in.

Bláthnaid 'Bee' Tobin

Content Creator & Artist Liaison

I am a seventeen year old award winning producer/singer/songwriter from Waterford city centre. Growing up as a sensitive kid, I write about issues close to my heart like the struggles of being neurodiverse. When I'm not playing with mu two cats and three dogs, I am busy being a youth ambassador with Laochas WSP. Through volunteering I have made impacts and connections throughout Ireland. I find myself in many creative settings largely due to my involvement with Waterford Youth Arts. I use my voice to show people a more inclusive and kind way of life, which is very important to me as a teenager living with a chronic illness. For the last year and a half, I have been a part of The Lit with Waterford Youth Arts, hoping to make literature and the arts more accessible.

Ellie Skelton

Marketing Assistant

I have been involved with books and literature since I was as young as 2 or 3, when my dad would read to me almost every night. Nowadays, you’d be lucky to find me without a book in hand. I've been involved in the arts for the last couple of years with Waterford Centre of Music, and spend the majority of my time with my cat, 4 chickens, or simply reading or writing. In school, I sit as the chairperson of the Irish Committee, and I enjoy coming up with new ideas and ways to improve anything to do with the native language. But most of all, I love reading, writing and using words on a page to express myself in ways other things can’t. I've not been in The Lit that long, but I hope that everyone, whether working behind the scenes, or visiting on the day, will grow to love and admire literature in ways I, and many others do.

Our Lasting Impact

Through our festival, we inspire thousands of young individuals, encouraging them to express themselves through writing and literature.

We're keen to support young people as they transition from enthusiasts to artists to programmers, and keep the links between those young people who helped build the programme to our new cohort of co-organisers.
